Introduction

OPTEX’s sensor systems protect valuable artworks and artifacts in museums and art galleries around the world. High-value pieces and historically significant exhibits face risks of being touched, damaged, or stolen. While CCTV and security guards are commonly used, blind spots and human error make it difficult to ensure complete protection.
OPTEX sensors detect attempts to touch exhibits and intrusions during closed hours or at night in real time, triggering alarms. In addition, by integrating with surveillance camera systems, they enable immediate visual confirmation and support rapid response.

Pain Points

  • Preventing contact with exhibits and nighttime intrusion
During opening hours, it is necessary to prevent visitors from touching paintings and exhibits. After closing, protection against unauthorized entry into the premises or building is essential. Flexible security that can adapt to different risks depending on the time of day is required.
  • Fast and accurate threat detection
It is critical to quickly identify threats to artworks and exhibits and notify security staff reliably while minimizing false alarms. Delays or false alerts can lead to damage or theft.
  • Protection of critical areas beyond exhibition spaces
It is necessary to prevent unauthorized access not only to exhibition rooms but also to storage areas and restricted zones. A system that enables centralized management of multiple areas is essential.
  • Preserving aesthetics and visitor experiences
If security devices are too conspicuous, they can detract from the viewing experience and the facility’s aesthetics. A system that balances safety and design is often required.

Protect Exhibits with Discreet LiDAR Sensors

OPTEX’s compact LiDAR sensor RLS-2020 series creates an invisible virtual wall to detect hands or bodies approaching exhibits in real time.
With Area Allocation Setting, detection zones can be configured to cover only the exhibits, preventing false alarms when touching walls or surrounding structures.

During nighttime or closed hours, detection areas and settings can be switched to detect an intruder, providing flexible security for different time zones.

Furthermore, The sensor can be integrated with video survallance system to provide a highly accurate warning system which enables you to immediately confirm alarm scenes locally or remotely.
When a sensor detects, a linked camera will be triggered for actions such as Live pop-up or PTZ camera control on the screen of monitoring room, and security guards can take a prompt action to dispatch for on-site check.

    Immediate Response with Sensor-Camera Integration

With conventional surveillance cameras alone, there is a risk that suspicious activity will be overlooked especially in facilities with large premises or complex layouts.
OPTEX’s Proactive Video Monitoring Solution (PVM) transforms cameras from passive recorders into active security tools by integrating them with intrusion detection sensors. When a sensor detects an intrusion, the system instantly displays live video of the relevant area on the security monitor and sends alerts to smartphones. It enables real-time assessment and rapid response PVM offers high flexibility and seamless integration with existing surveillance setups, including NVRs and VMS, making it easy to upgrade security efficiently.

Prevent Intrusion from Skylights and Roofs

Intruders can enter buildings not only through doors and windows but also via skylights and rooftops. For museums and galleries housing valuable exhibits, securing these areas is critical.
OPTEX’s REDSCAN series uses advanced LiDAR technology to minimize false alarms caused by insects, small animals, sudden light changes, or environmental factors, delivering consistent detection performance even in outdoor environments.
For skylights, REDSCAN mini can be installed horizontally inside or outside to create an invisible “virtual ceiling”, detecting intrusion attempts before they occur.
(For outdoor installation, please use the RLS-2020S model.)
For large rooftops the REDSCAN Pro series is recommended, offering long-range coverage up to 50m x 100m with a single sensor.

Easy Sensor Installation for Existing Museums / Galleries

OPTEX offers both wired and wireless security sensors for indoor and outdoor applications.
When wiring is difficult, OPTEX wireless burglar alarm system “GENIO series” provides an effective alternative, reducing installation time and effort. GENIO enables quick deployment without major construction work, making it ideal for retrofitting existing facilities. Sensors and alarm devices can be flexibly added to suit the building layout and security requirements.

GENIO Map – Easy to Use Alarm Monitoring Software

In museums and art galleries with large exhibition spaces or multiple floors, it is essential to have a system that allows for immediate identification of where and what is happening when an alarm is triggered.
OPTEX GENIO Map works with the GENIO burglar alarm system to display the source of issue — such as intrusion alarms or panic button activations — on a map image of the building on PC in real time, making it possible to pinpoint the exact location of the alert immediately.
GENIO Map also supports pre-configured incident response workflows and records operator actions, enhancing transparency and efficiency in security operations.
GENIO Map helps you make your security stronger for less cost and less effort, and supports safe operations over the long term.

People Counting for Safer and Smarter Operations

In museums and art galleries, accurately tracking visitor numbers and congestion in real time helps improve safety and create a more comfortable experience for guests.
OPTEX’s people counting system uses highly accurate sensors (with accuracy above 95%) installed at entrances and main pathways to automatically count entries and exits, providing clear and actionable data for facility managers.
By visualizing visitor numbers during peak times and on specific days, museums can optimize staffing levels and adjust layouts for better flow. And when the number of people in a particular area reaches a preset limit, the system issues automatic alerts, helping manage entry restrictions, ease congestion, and support safety measures during special exhibitions or events. This solution also supports infection control and ensures a safe, enjoyable environment for all visitors.
