Introduction

With the growing adoption of cloud-based internet services, the global demand for data centers continues to rise. While cybersecurity measures such as protection against cyberattacks often receive the most attention, physical intrusion prevention is equally critical.
In server rooms and other sensitive areas, intrusions can occur not only through standard entry points but also via rooftops, ceilings, and raised floors. Therefore, it is essential to monitor and secure all potential access routes. Effective security requires not only system implementation but also human resources—such as security personnel and operators—to monitor surveillance camera footage and respond immediately in case of emergencies. To ensure fast and reliable response, it is crucial to build a system that can detect intruders and suspicious individuals both efficiently and accurately.
OPTEX’s intrusion detection sensor systems integrate seamlessly with surveillance cameras to create a high-precision perimeter monitoring solution based on alarm-triggered video verification. This enables streamlined and reliable emergency response operations. These systems are trusted and installed in data centers around the world.

Pain Points

    • Risks of Data Theft and Damage
Data centers that handle critical information face the constant threat of data theft or destruction. To protect these valuable assets, 24-hour security measures are required.
    • Need for Immediate and Reliable Intrusion Detection
Efficiently and accurately detecting intrusions or suspicious individuals—and enabling immediate response—is essential for maintaining the secure operation of data centers.
    • Requirement for Multi-layered Defense Against Various Entry Routes
Enhancing security requires monitoring not only entrances and exits, but also a wide range of potential intrusion paths, such as roofs, ceilings, and floors, to close any vulnerabilities.

Perimeter Monitoring for Effective Multi-layered Defense

For perimeter security at data centers, it is effective to use long-range fiber sensors and high-precision LiDAR sensors depending on the specific application.
OPTEX’s fiber sensors can be installed along fences or underground to monitor wide areas—spanning tens of kilometers—in real time, 24 hours a day. They accurately detect suspicious activities such as climbing over or cutting through fences.
For focused monitoring of specific zones such as gates and entrances, or areas without fencing, LiDAR sensors are more suitable. These sensors can precisely detect the moment a person or vehicle crosses into the detection zone.
By combining these sensor systems, early intrusion detection and rapid initial response at the perimeter can be achieved, significantly reducing the risk of unauthorized access to critical information assets.

Detecting Unauthorized Intrusion and Suspicious Behavior with LiDAR Sensors

OPTEX’s LiDAR sensors are widely installed in data centers around the world to prevent unauthorized access to buildings and server rooms, as well as to detect suspicious behavior within secure areas.
These sensors offer high-precision human detection and can instantly notify monitoring centers when movement is detected. This enables remote verification via camera footage to determine whether the individual is an authorized person. Please refer to the comparison table below to select the most suitable model for your needs.

3-1. Rooftop Intrusion Prevention

Intrusions via rooftops can occur not only through access doors but also by breaching the roof itself. Therefore, it is important to cover the entire rooftop area to enhance security. OPTEX’s LiDAR sensors provide wide-area detection across the rooftop surface. Unlike video analytics systems, which may be affected by environmental factors such as sunlight, rain, small animals, or ambient brightness, these sensors are designed to dramatically reduce false alarms and missed detections caused by such conditions.

In particular, the REDSCAN Pro series can cover large areas with a single unit*, reducing the number of devices required and minimizing installation workload. Additionally, this series supports ONVIF-compliant communication protocols, enabling alarm outputs to be sent to ONVIF-compatible IP network devices.

*For example, the RLS-50100V model offers a detection range of up to 50 x 100 meters.

3-2. Ceiling and Floor Intrusion Prevention in Server Rooms

Server rooms, which store critical information, are among the most sensitive zones in a data center and require strict intrusion prevention measures. Unauthorized access can occur not only through standard entry points but also via ceilings or raised floors, making it essential to secure multiple potential entry routes. OPTEX’s LiDAR sensors offer flexible installation options—either in vertical or horizontal configurations—allowing the creation of virtual detection zones along ceilings, floors, and walls. This enables comprehensive protection against various intrusion paths. These sensors also operate reliably in complete darkness and cold environments, making them highly suitable for server room security.

3-3. Detecting Unauthorized Actions Inside Server Rooms

In server rooms where equipment is stored within wire mesh cages, OPTEX’s LiDAR sensors are used to detect unauthorized access into the cages or attempts to insert objects through gaps in the mesh. By adjusting the detection target size, these sensors can trigger alarms not only when a person enters the area, but also when small items—such as USB sticks—pass through the detection zone. This capability makes them highly effective for preventing data theft and other unauthorized activities in critical environments.

Access Control for Secure Areas – Preventing Unauthorized Entry

In data centers, access permissions are typically segmented by location or room, ensuring that only authorized personnel can enter each designated area.
While access control systems using ID cards or biometric authentication are commonly used, these systems alone cannot fully prevent unauthorized entry through tailgating—when an unauthorized person follows closely behind an authorized user.
OPTEX’s tailgating detection system, Accurance OV-102, provides a reliable solution to monitor and ensure that only one authorized individual enters a secure area at a time. Sensors are placed on the ceiling near the entrances; they quickly notice if someone tries to enter right after another person and give a warning. This helps stop people from entering together when they should not, so access control is more secure and entry records are managed clearly.
